Professor Ted Tyler has been temporarily attached to the Department of Justice in Hong Kong
as a member of the Companies Ordinance Rewrite team, since 2007.
Professor Tyler graduated from the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom and was called
to the Bar by Lincoln's Inn in 1961. He practised as a barrister from Liverpool until 1978 when
he returned to Tasmania to practise in a fused profession (where he was on the Council of the
Law Society and Conveyancing Counsel to the Supreme Court). He first visited Hong Kong in
1983 for the Commonwealth Law Conference and joined The University of Hong Kong in
1985. Professor Tyler has been chair professor at the Law Schools of both The University of
Hong Kong and City University of Hong Kong and a District Judge, and has lectured and
written on Hong Kong Company Law for 25 years. He retired in 2003.
